The figure that sticks in everyone’s mind is 28.

Twenty-eight percent of Philadelphian’s 1,526,000 million people live in poverty, one of the highest percentages of any major city in America.

That number was the focus of a news conference held last week to announce the city’s new initiative on poverty, a program aimed at better coordinating the multitude of government and private agencies whose missions involve helping, housing, feeding and training the poor.

Obviously, the Great Recession caused a spike in the number of poor people, as workers were laid off or had their hours slashed.  There is an indication in the most recent U.S Census data that the number of people in poverty in the city is receding a bit as the economy recovers, but the number still hovers around 425,000.

How much do you know about the poor in Philly besides that 28 percent figure?  Answer the following questions to learn more.
